Number one: the size of the pieces. With only a few bags, there’s no reason to pay for something so big that an elephant could park there. It’s not always true that bigger is better; sometimes it’s just more expensive. Figure out what you need to store. If not, a small 8–12-square-foot room would be fine for students or single people and costs around HK$400–700 a month.
Controlling the temperature is the second benefit. Some places, like those with air conditioning and fridges, cost more and may be up to 20 percent more a month. But you have your comic book collection and your grandmother’s mahjong cards, so it’s worth it. The price is also affected by safety. Personal alarms, CCTV (round the clock) cameras, and keypad entry raise the renting prices.
Don’t forget about place either. Do not choose a storage space right next to the MTR exit over one that is hidden three blocks away from the road. But it doesn’t help to save a few dollars if you have to carry your carry-on bags around like a wild horse every time you turn a corner. The price of ease goes up over time, and every minute counts when it comes to storing things you use all the time.
